CHapters 7, 8 & 9An encounter over blackberries, school aND birthday boy Summary We are starting to see some changes within the characters already. These chapters open with Willie feeling defeated as he is beaten in a race by Sammy. A group go off to pick blackberries and have a picnic. Whilst they are away Tom furnishes the Anderson shelter. Willie reflects how he is now socialising with his friends. It is then Willie’s first day of school, unfortunately due to his level of attainment he is in the lower class.
