SEPTEMBER 2022 NEWSLETTER

Brochure

Welcome to HEON’s updated brochure for academic year 22-23. This year we will be looking to work closely with you as a school/college. If there is anything in the brochure that you would like to offer to your students, then please do not hesitate to get in touch.

We are extremely keen as always to ensure that we do our utmost to cater to your needs and if there is something that you would like to discuss that would be bespoke to your students or you have had delivered in the past then please also get in touch with your partner officer or Nathan Simpson.

THORPE PARK CHALLENGE

HEON is delighted to offer your school the opportunity to participate in a regional enterprise challenge in the summer term. We have partnered with The Inspirational Learning Group (TILG) and Thorpe Park to offer 10 enterprise challenge days, with winning teams from each school then invited to a finals event at Thorpe Park!

What is an enterprise challenge day?
The day presents students with a real-life business challenge as set by a real-life business. Delivered over a full school day, students will work in teams to respond to the challenge, work as a team, communicate, problem solve, think creatively, and more to ensure they meet the brief set by the client.

Students are challenged to design a brand-new ride or attraction for Thorpe Park where the queue line is an integral part of the ride experience. Students will consider how they would brand their new ride and how they would market it to their target market, including the use of celebrity endorsements. Students will also develop an idea for a new, associated product which could be sold in the Thorpe Park gift shop before pitching their ideas to the judging panel. The winning team will then be invited to a regional finals day at Thorpe Park in October/early November (TBC)!

Who is it for?
The day can be delivered to up to 40 students in either year 10. We will be asking for all students in attendance to be HEON target, we are also happy to work towards 75% as a minimum.

When is it?
The enterprise challenge day will take place over the whole school day, and the date can be scheduled flexibly to suit your timetable/availability. The finals day at Thorpe Park will take place at the end of October/early November (TBC).

Is there any cost?
As with all HEON events, all costs are covered, including resources, delivery by TILG and entry and travel to the finals event at Thorpe Park.

Who are the Inspirational Learning Group?
TILG are an experienced educational enterprise team delivering to schools across the county, with the ultimate aim of supporting young people to develop the skills needed for the world of work. They deliver via their platform, Launchyourcareer.com, which you would also have access to after the day (if you choose to keep!)

To express your interest please email Nathan Simpson at n.simpson@surrey.ac.uk. Please be aware there are limited spaces.

ACTIVITY SHOWCASE

Higher Education Taster Days

Each month we will be showcasing one activity from our brochure to give you a flavour of what HEON can offer to your schools and colleges. On the opening month of the academic year, we will be showcasing our ‘Higher Education Taster Days’.

Our Taster Days feature academic sessions, sessions from our fantastic partner institutions and information, advice and guidance (IAG) sessions. Students also have the opportunity to take part in a campus tour and speak to current university students.

Our taster days have received strong feedback from both students and teachers in the past and have been found to increase the confidence and understanding of students wanting to make a move into higher education.

Although this opportunity is very much carried out within a University setting, HEON provides a thorough rundown of higher education options across the board from undergraduate degrees to degree apprenticeships.

This is a fantastic option for students who have made their minds up about their next step into higher education and for students who are still unsure of their future decision.

Catering and travel are also provided by HEON free of charge. Taster days are hosted at one of our HEON partner campuses.

Please do not hesitate to contact your designated partner officer or Nathan Simpson. to enquire about a HE Taster Day.

The opportunities available from The University of Surrey are:

The University of Surrey is offering the following programme to students who are in the process of applying to university:

AIM4UNIVERSITY – AIM HIGH AND STAND OUT IN YOUR UNIVERSITY APPLICATION

Your students are invited to take part on AIM4University, a sustained programme designed to provide advice, information and mentoring (AIM) to support students with their UCAS application, personal statement and much more.

Starting on Monday 26 September, the programme is flexible and tailored to fit individual requirements with 4 ways to engage:

•            On demand recorded content
•            Live webinars
•            1:1 online mentoring
•            Invitations to exclusive campus visits

How does it work?

The mentoring service matches eligible applicants with a current University of Surrey student who can share practical advice towards structuring their application in addition to recommendations towards work experience, reading and references. Students will also get ahead in their preparation by receiving invitations to attend exclusive weekly webinars on areas such as personal statements, applying for student finance and university life.

Furthermore, participants on the programme will be invited to attend exclusive campus visits on either Wednesday 26 or Saturday 29 October with appointments available with our student success advisors to learn more about the pastoral support available at the University of Surrey.

Student Feedback

“The programme was very helpful and I am more confident and prepared for university now.”
“Using Brightside to communicate with our mentors who know first hand what the process of getting to university is like was the most helpful.”
