Residential “Discover” Summer School 2024

Monday 29 July – Thursday 1 August 2024

The HEON partnership would like to welcome you to their 2024 Summer School experience. Now in it’s seventh year, the Summer School has long been one of HEON’s most impactful, popular programmes.

This year’s Summer School will be delivered in collaboration with the University of Surrey’s Discover Summer School.

The Summer School is completely Free including all meals, activities and accommodation and accommodation. 

The Discover Summer School for students in years 9, 10 and 11 will run from Monday 29th July – Thursday 1st August 2024 which includes a three night stay in student accommodation at the University of Surrey.  During the week you will take part in a variety of interactive subject taster workshops and information sessions designed to showcase all Higher Education options.  These will be delivered by HEON and University of Surrey staff, as well as by the local Universities, Colleges and other partners that make up the HEON partnership across Surrey and North East Hampshire

A great incentive of a Summer School is the chance to experience independent living in a safe and educational environment. There will be a variety of activities delivered in different formats and by different partners – these can include lab practicals, workshops, seminars and lectures, all of which are highly engaging and interactive.  There will also be fun and a chance to relax in the evenings. Successfully completing a Summer School might be a great way to prove that you are a capable, self-reliant individual. There are so many benefits, including:

Application

Applications are welcome from all students, but priority will be given to those that are from Underrepresented backgrounds in HE – please refer to our ‘who is eligible’ section to check eligibility.

You will need to complete an application form on behalf of your child (see below) and their details will be held until the application deadline has passed.  You and your child will then be notified as to whether their application has been successful or not.  If their application has been successful, we will then need you to complete a registration form which will include specific requirements for your child that will help us provided tailored support whilst they are at our Summer School.

Student Safety

All members of the HEON Summer School staff hold an enhanced DBS certificate as do all our student ambassadors who support the event.

All students participating in events are supervised by a members of our team. All student stay in individual en-suite rooms in ‘same sex’ residential blocks with HEON members of staff & student ambassadors

The University of Surrey Security team are all first aid trained and are available on campus 24/7.

Cost

The summer school is completely free – all costs will be covered by HEON and the University of Surrey!

Eligibility for all HEON events is determined by a number of criteria listed below:

  • disabled students
  • free school meal eligible students
  • care experienced young people
  • young carers
  • students from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities
  • students from black, minority & ethnic groups
  • refugee & asylum seeking students
  • children from military families
  • home postcode – live in an area of low progression to HE (TUNDRA or IMD Q1 area)
