The Higher Education Outreach Network (HEON) is a partnership working in Surrey and North East Hampshire. We aim to increase the progression rates of students who are currently underrepresented in Higher Education.
National Collaborative Outreach Programme
As of January 2017, HEON is working with a range of partners to deliver targeted collaborative outreach in 11 specific wards within Surrey and North East Hampshire. HEON’s target wards have been identified as areas where the proportion of young people progressing to HE is low overall, and lower than expected given their GCSE attainment levels. HEON is one of twenty nine local consortia to be funded under the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP). The NCOP aims to double the proportion of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in higher education (HE) by 2020. You can learn more about the NCOP on HEFCE's webpages, and view their press release.
Under the NCOP, HEON will deliver collaborative outreach to pupils in Years 9 to 13 who reside in specific wards. Young people will receive impartial Information Advice and Guidance on HE and progression routes, in order to support the government’s aim of increasing the university progression rates of young people living in the target wards. Staff at HEON’s partner institutions will be funded to work collaboratively and inform young people of the variety of opportunities available at university, and how to navigate the path towards a HE course.
The NCOP funding will support the development of previous collaborative outreach work delivered by HEON, which has grown from four to eight local partners:
